Occupy Nashville gains time to regroup

posted by Mary

Occupy Nashville protesters received an unexpected reprieve Thursday, but the group nevertheless said it is prepping for another confrontation that would challenge the state’s power to oust its camp from the grounds of the Tennessee Capitol.

Obama unveils big spending election-year budget

posted by Mary

President Barack Obama called on Monday for aggressive spending to boost growth and for higher taxes on the rich, laying out an election-year vision for America in a budget that was criticized sharply by Republicans for failing to curb the deficit.

How "Occupy Our Homes" Can Win

posted by Mary

Occupy Our Homes has three particularly good instincts.

First, it takes the general critique of inequality that the movement has been voicing -- something often expressed in abstract charts and tables -- and makes the issue concrete.

OWS Defy Police in Oakland, Comply in DC

posted by Mary

Meanwhile, protestors in McPhereson Square and Freedom Park in Washington, D.C., peacefully defied a no-camping order set to go into effect on Monday morning. A bit of semantics is involved here: protestors are allowed to hold 24-hour vigils in city parks, but not to sleep there, and so by removing many of their tents and other sleeping arrangements, the group was able to comply with the order while remaining in the park. Officials have stated that the demonstrators are complying with the request, and there were no reports of violence.

Gay marriage proponent who urged halt to Prop. 8 enforcement dies

posted by Mary

"Derence Kernek and Ed Watson became prominent faces in the California gay community's campaign for the right to marry when they urged a federal appeals court earlier this year to halt the enforcement of Proposition 8 so they could wed before Watson succumbed to advancing illness.

On the eve of a Thursday hearing on challenges to a 2010 ruling that the voter initiative banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, Watson died at age 78 of complications from Alzheimer's disease, diabetes and hypertension."
